DST/NRF South African Research Chair (SARChI): Medical Entomology and Vector Control
Affiliation: Wits Research Institute for Malaria, University of the Witwatersrand

This Chair has three objectives: a) to study the biology and biodiversity of anopheline mosquitoes in southern Africa; b) to investigate novel methods of mosquito control; and c) to study parasite vector interactions. Much of the research is done in collaboration with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases for fieldwork on novel mosquito control methods and mosquito biodiversity. The parasite-vector interactions focus is new with infections facilities only recently being built at Wits Medical School. Already, these facilities are being used to collaborate on the MRC SHIP SAMTC project with L Birkholtz. The Chair functions within the Wits Research Institute for Malaria (WRIM), also a MRC Collaborating Centre for Malaria Research. WRIM comprises all Wits researchers interested in malaria, from clinical to pharmaceutical, research to surveillance, in collaboration with the National and Provincial Department of Health’s malaria control programmes.
