The Chair in Sustainable Malaria Control uses high-content biological information of malaria parasites to support sustained malaria control interventions towards malaria elimination. The Chair focuses uniquely on both the pathogenic and transmissible forms of malaria parasites to describe novel potential antimalarials that can treat patients and block human-to-mosquito malaria transmission. Malaria parasite biology, functional genomics and transmission-blocking antimalarials are investigated to describe drug targets and mode-of-action. The Chair leads the SAMTC (MRC SHIP funded), a unique platform in Africa to identify transmission-blocking antimalarials. The Chair functions in the University of Pretoria Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control (UP ISMC), a MRC Collaborating Centre for Malaria Research, which allows fully integrated, multi-disciplinary, interfaculty research that coordinates and promote collaborative activities towards safer and sustainable malaria control and management strategies.
