Kagiso Trainings: Investing in Growth and Collective Building

Posted on August 25, 2025

UP RAG recently hosted the Kagiso Trainings, an initiative rooted in the principle of Kagiso — meaning “to build”. These sessions were designed to empower our UP students with knowledge, skills, and perspectives that will strengthen both individual growth and the collective impact of our organisation.

The first session provided a strong foundation, focusing on equipping members with practical insights and reflective tools for leadership, collaboration, and effective engagement. Participants were encouraged to think critically about their roles within RAG and the greater student community, while also developing the confidence to take ownership of their contributions. The discussions that unfolded reflected a shared commitment to growth, inclusivity, and service.

The second session brought in an invaluable external perspective. We were privileged to have the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS & Gender (CSA&G) join us and contribute their expertise. Their involvement not only expanded the scope of our training but also enriched the conversation by highlighting the importance of understanding intersectionality, inclusivity, and the role of social awareness in leadership. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to CSA&G for partnering with us and ensuring that our members are equipped with knowledge that will enable them to foster safer, more respectful, and more informed environments within their spaces of influence.

These trainings have gone beyond simply providing information; they have created a platform for dialogue, reflection, and empowerment. Members left the sessions with a renewed sense of purpose and practical strategies to bring into their community engagement efforts.

As UP RAG, we believe that leadership and service are built on strong foundations of knowledge, empathy, and collaboration. The Kagiso Trainings have reaffirmed our commitment to not only mobilising resources and support for our communities but also investing in the growth of the people who make our work possible.

We look forward to building on this momentum and creating more opportunities where learning, leadership, and community engagement intersect. Together, we build — Kagiso.
