Prof Flavia Senkubuge appointed as new dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences

Professor Flavia Senkubuge has been appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, effective 01 May 2025. 
 
Professor Senkubuge has been serving as the Deputy Dean for Stakeholder Relations in the Faculty of Health Sciences since 1 October 2021. She began her academic career at the University of Pretoria in January 2011, where she held the positions of Specialist in Public Health Medicine and Senior Lecturer in Health Policy and Management. She has also served as the acting Vice-Principal for Student Life from 01 August 2023 to 30 September 2024.
 
She holds the following qualifications and fellowships:
 
PhD in Public Health (University of Pretoria)
Master of Business Administration (MBA – Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, UK)
Master of Medicine with a specialisation in Public Health Medicine (University of Pretoria)
Fellowship of the College of Public Health Medicine (FCPHM) of the Colleges of Medicine South Africa (CMSA)
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB – University of Pretoria)
 
Professor Senkubuge has an outstanding research record, featuring numerous peer-reviewed publications and technical reports. Notably, she served as the lead author of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 Report for South Africa.
 
She has been instrumental in establishing the Health Business Unit (HBU), a collaborative initiative with Enterprise@UP, aimed at securing external funding for the Faculty. Additionally, Professor Senkubuge was the Immediate Past President of the Colleges of Medicine South Africa (CMSA) and served as Chair of the WHO/Afro-African Advisory Council on Research and Development. She also represents the South African Committee of Deans (SACOMD) on the Joint Steering Committee of the Presidential Health Compact.

Reflecting on his tenure, he added "It has been a privilege for me to serve as Dean of this amazing Faculty for almost nine years. I wish to sincerely thank all staff and students for their unwavering support and contributions to our shared pursuit of excellence. As Director of the UP Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control, I look forward to continuing our collaboration".
