Health Measurement Sciences (HMS)

About HMS

The Division of Health Measurement Sciences (HMS), within the School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH), deals with quantitative aspects of public health, including Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E).

Our Division hosts the South African Field Epidemiology Training Programme (SAFETP) in collaboration with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). We also provide biostatistics support in terms of sample size calculations, study design, statistical analysis plans, data collection and management, statistical data analysis, and reporting, to staff and students within the SHSPH.

We also support training in the use of statistical software such as Stata. Our areas of research are broad, spanning from communicable to non-communicable diseases.

We have supported grant applications in a wide spectrum of public health fields of research, where we have published widely.  We supervise students from Diploma through to Post-Docs.
