Behavioral and Health Management Sciences (BHMS)

About BHMS

The Behaviour and Health Management Sciences (BHMS) Division is a combination of the Health Policy and Management Track and Health Promotion Track in the SHSPH. The key objectives of the BHMS Division are to develop capacity in South Africa and the rest of Africa to

  1. manage health services and systems,
  2. develop and implement policies to improve population health, and
  3. undertake health promotion activities to address communicable and non-communicable diseases.

We do this through our formal modules in the Master of Public Health programme, the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, and the Albertina Sisulu Executive Leadership Programme in Health (ASELPH). We also present several short courses related to behaviour and health systems management.

The Division has a vibrant research programme focussed on health systems management and health promotion research including the supervision of student research at Master’s and Doctoral level.

Finally, the members of the BHMS are also active in community engagement in various settings.
