The SHSPH makes a new appointment to strengthen its footprint for international collaborations and partnerships

The School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH) welcomes our new non-salaried Extraordinary Professor appointment, Prof John Ele-Ojo Ataguba. Prof Ataguba holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cape Town and is the Canada Research Chair in Health Economics at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He is an internationally accomplished health economics professor. He is the Executive Director of the African Health Economics and Policy Association (AfHEA). Prof Ataguba is also the founding co-editor-in-chief of the SSM Health Systems journal and a member of the United Nations Global Council on Inequality, AIDS and Pandemics. He is a Board Director for the International Health Economics Association (IHEA)and a research fellow for the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) network. He received many awards, including the 2016/17 TW Kambule-NSTF Award to emerging researchers in South Africa. Prof Ataguba has extensive experience in many African countries, providing technical support and teaching health economics and health systems. He has served as an advisor nationally and to international agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO). Recently, he was one of the key experts for the WHO in developing an operational framework for monitoring social determinants of health equity. Prof Ataguba will be a great addition to the SHSPH, and the SHSPH is excited to work with him to grow our research, teaching, international collaborations and partner networks.
