Posted on July 18, 2022

This year the UP Department of Inofrmation Science was involved in the 17th International Conference on Knowledge Management (ICKM) which took place between 23-24 June 2022. The venue for the conference was a very scenic Postdam in Germany. The conference was a hybrid conference allowing for both virtual and physical participation. The Department of Information Science was represented by three staff member Prof Ina Fourie, Dr Daniel Alemneh (visiting Fullbright scholar from University of North Texas) and Dr Paul Laughton. Prof Ina Fourie and Dr Daniel Alemneh were involved in an interesting and thought provoking panel discussion on the Changing Landscape of Scholarly Communications: Open Access, which addressed new developments and changes in Open Access in the Scholarly Communication.

The department colleagues presented three papers. Dr Alemneh presented two papers, one in the Big Data track entitled Application of Big Data Analytics in Precision Medicine: Lesson for Ethiopia and one in the Text Analystics track entitled Extractive Automatic Text Summarization Techniques for Afaan Oromoo –Afroasiatic Language in Ethiopia (co-presented). While Dr Laughton presented a paper in the Knowledge entitled Are we missing the importance creativity in knowledge management?

Overall the conference was very insightful with a great range of speakers and experts in the Knowledge Management field.
