Collaborative research on aspects of e-lexicography

Prof Theo Bothma, of the Department of Information Science, at the University of Pretoria has been in collaborative research on aspects of e-lexicography over many years with the following researchers who are internationally well-renowned and respected in their fields of study.

Prof Theo Bothma

Prof Rufus Gouws

Prof Danie Prinsloo

Prof Ulrich Heid

Prof Henning Bergenholtz

Prof Sven Tarp

Collaborative research

Professor Bothma’s research in the interdisciplinary field of e-lexicography and information Science began in 2010, when he was invited by Professor Henning Bergenholtz from Aarhus University in Denmark to spend three months as visiting professor at the Centre for Lexicography at Aarhus University. During his visit, he was involved in collaborative research with colleagues at Aarhus, including Professor Sven Tarp. He also presented two three-hour workshops to doctoral students, and prepared a paper for a lexicography conference in Valladolid, Spain. In 2011, he was invited by Professor Ulrich Heid from the University of Hildesheim in Germany to be one of the principal investigators in the SeLA project, Scientific e-Lexicography for Africa, funded by the DAAD (2011-2015). Together with Professor Tarp, he was invited by Professor Pedro Fuertes-Olivera of the University of Valladolid in Spain to spend two weeks in 2013 doing research on the structure of the Universal Dictionary of Trade and Commerce, published in four editions between 1751 and 1774, in the university library. Professor Rufus Gouws (Stellenbosch) is a long-time research collaborator of Professors Bergenholtz and Tarp, as well as a member of the SeLA research initiative; Prof Danie Prinsloo (UP) is similarly a long-time research collaborator of Professor Heid, and also a member of the SeLA research initiative. The collaboration led, in addition, directly to the Master’s thesis of Dr Liezl Ball (on the evaluation of a prototype Afrikaans dictionary of fixed expressions), and a number of articles and conference presentations with Professor Bothma, based on this research. Professor Bothma’s collaborative research with these international and local research collaborators during the past eleven years resulted in 18 peer-reviewed research articles, two book chapters, and five published conference papers, as well as 21 unpublished conference presentations and two invited keynote papers at international conferences. The collaboration is ongoing.
