On 10 May 2018, the Department of Human Resource Management’s Annual Prize Giving Ceremony was held at the spectacular Villa Sterne Guesthouse in Pretoria. On arrival, guests were greeted with sherry and a breath-taking view overlooking Pretoria and the Union Buildings, with a cosy fire crackling in the corner and a violin playing softly in the background to create the ideal atmosphere.

The formal prize giving evening started with the Department’s HOD, Prof Alewyn Nel, giving a speech, after which the prizes were awarded to the undergraduate prize winners, HR Tuks, honours students and the master’s degree student. Each sponsor was called to award their prize to the relevant winners. The prize winners and sponsors for the evening included:
  • Jeanne-Lee Smit: Award for the best achievement during the three-year study period for the degree BCom in Human Resource Management, awarded by Chantelle van der Walt from Lexis Nexis
  • Maryke Nel: Award for the best achievement in the subject Labour Relations, awarded by Marieta van Zyl from AHI Employers Organisation
  • HR Tuks: Award for the most improved sub-house in the Faculty of EMS and the best fundraising initiative in the Faculty during 2017, awarded by Mr Sakkie van Greunen
  • Tiffany Webster: Award for the best achievement for the degree BCom Honours in Human Resource Management, awarded by Dr Jerry Gule from the Institute of People Management (IPM)
  • Jeshika Gopal: Award for the best academic achievement in research subjects for the degree BCom Honours in Human Resource Management, awarded by Dr Jerry Gule from the Institute of People Management (IPM)

  • Alice Slabbert: Award for the best overall achievement for the degree MCom in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, awarded by Mr Naren Vissan from the SABPP
Once the prizegiving concluded, a wide range of refreshments were served. A big thank you goes to the Department for hosting such a special evening. This event is evidence that the Department is appreciative of and values all of the HR student’s hard work and dedication. We hope that more students will become motivated to work hard to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event themselves.
