The programme is sponsored by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and focuses on developing leadership qualities in students of the faculty.
The workshops aims to empower students by helping them to recognize their potential as leaders, identifying barriers to leadership, and exploring leadership styles in order to leave a worthwhile Legacy.
The workshops were presented throughout the year and on 29 October 2009 a leadership certificate ceremony was held in honour of the students who attended the workshops and the Masters students who developed and presented the workshops.
The ceremony opened with Prof Carolina Koornhof who welcomed the guests and reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to developing leaders. Jean Cooper, the programme coordinator and lecturer, also thanked the students for their participation and dedication to the success of the workshops and introduced the guest speaker, Prof Stella Nkomo who recently joined the HR department.
Prof Stella inspired students and staff alike by her discussion of leadership as a journey (and not a destination!). She offered five keys to a great journey, namely (1) engaging in lifelong learning; (2) being sober and reflective about accepting the call to lead; (3) listening to the voices of others; (4) becoming more knowable and visible to ourselves; and (5) to never stop dreaming of the possibilities of what can be.

Prof Koornhof subsequently handed the students their certificates, and the Masters students were presented with tokens of appreciation.
Overall then, the night was a success – the students were given fuel to continue their leadership journey by:
Fuelling their hearts – students were thanked for their participation and commitment to leaving a Legacy!
Fuelling their minds – students were inspired and motivated in their leadership journey and its keys to success!
Fuelling their bodies – students’ tummies was filled with delicious snacks!
Fuelling their eyes – the venue was aesthetically pleasing and very beautiful!
