Presentation on career advancement

Posted on July 23, 2013

The congress was hosted by the University of Münster, Germany, and organised by the two German EAWOP constituents, namely the Work Section: Organisational and Business Psychology of the German Association for Psychology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie), and the Business Section: Professional Association of German Psychologists (Berufsverband Deutscher Psychologinnen und Psychologen). The theme of the 16th Congress, which was ‘Imagine the future world: How do we want to work tomorrow?’, was intended to inspire new and innovative ideas on how to cope with the many challenges that are currently being experienced in organisations, for instance demographic changes, financial turbulence and escalating climatic problems.

Dr Carrim gave a poster presentation entitled ‘Career advancement of Indian males in corporate South Africa’ and reviewed research on how the phenomenon of black males entering management positions has gained momentum in post-apartheid South Africa. Historically disadvantaged groups in South Africa, including Indian men, are increasingly aspiring towards higher managerial positions. However, not much is known about the challenges they have to face in their pursuit of top positions in management.

South African studies dealing with the upward mobility of previously disadvantaged groups focus predominantly on the experiences of African males, with Indian males being treated as a subcategory of black males. Very little research has been conducted on Indian males as a minority group in the corporate environment and their experiences of career advancement. This study is therefore one of the first studies that shed light on the life and career journeys of Indian men in management in South Africa and the strategies they employ to advance in their careers.
