Posted on April 22, 2025

Corienne Erasmus, who is currently enrolled in our BScHons Geoinformatic programme, has been selected to join SEAmester VIII. She will join the other successful applicants aboard the SA Aghulas II on 17 June, and return to Cape Town on 27 June. This year's selection process was highly competitive, with over 200 applications for only 40 available berths.

SEAmester is a unique floating classroom experience that allows students to engage in marine science and oceanography while living aboard a research vessel, the SA Agulhas II. Participants gain hands-on experience in oceanographic research, seamanship, and environmental studies, all while sailing across the diverse marine environments of the South African coastline. Students conduct real-world research, including water sampling and marine ecosystem analysis, enhancing their practical skills. They also gain exposure to oceanographic instruments and methodologies used by professionals by working alongside experienced researchers, using specialized instruments such as CTD profilers, sediment corers, and water samplers to collect and analyze data. The program also encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, helping participants develop skills in data analysis, scientific communication, and teamwork.

SEAmester also offers unique networking opportunities, by facilitating interaction between students and leading scientists and researchers in marine sciences. It is also a lot of fun and participants develop teamwork skills, leadership, and problem-solving skills in a dynamic environment.
