We are pleased to announce that Mulisa Mudau, an MSc student in the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology, successfully participated in the 5th Big Data Africa School (BDAS), hosted by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) in Cape Town from 10 to 15 March 2025.
This year’s Big Data Africa School was themed “Applying Machine and Deep Learning Techniques to Earth Observation Data in Addressing African Challenges”. It brought together a total of 26 postgraduate students from South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia for hands-on training programme aimed at equipping young scientists with the data science skills required to tackle environmental and developmental challenges.
Mulisa was selected as one of the participants based on his strong academic background and commitment to the application of data science in climate and environmental research. During the school, his team’s work was recognised as the second-best project overall, earning the runner-up position during the final day presentations judged by an expert panel.
He also gained hands-on experience with Digital Earth Africa’s Sandbox Cloud, collaborated with international peers, and visited the AWS Skills Centre to explore cloud-based tools for development.
