Speaker Bio
Dr Chris Prins obtained his PhD at the Ecole des Mines de Paris with the title of his thesis: “Sampling, simulation and estimation of secondary diamond deposits”. He started his career in Kimberley working with kimberlite deposits, then did software development transitioning from mainframe computers to personal computers. He was also involved in marine diamond estimation on the west coast of Southern Africa and did resource estimation and sample optimisation projects. He had a brief placement in Canada working in a copper/iron/gold mine in Flin Flon and on this return continued with west coast mineral resource development. In 2004, Chris joined a research team that was based in England in Wells where research was done on the estimation of dumps and sample optimisation in non-stationary environments. After this office was closed, Chris returned to South Africa and developed a micro-diamond estimation system in Excel and smaller sample optimisation projects in Oranjemund (Namibia). He was appointed as an Honorary Adjunct Professor at Wits University for a few years.
