Zeenat Patel, who is currently enrolled in her BSc Honours in Geography and Environmental Sciences in our department, was awarded the Jubilee Bursary from the Society of South African Geographers for 2022. Her current Honours project, under the supervision of Dr Natalie Haussmann in our Department, and Prof Peter le Roux from the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences is preliminarily titled Microtopography and Drakensberg Alpine Grassland Vegetation Characteristics at Witsieshoek, South Africa.
Her project makes use of data from Prof le Roux's NRF-funded, multi-year project titled 'Examining the impacts of climate change in the Drakensberg'. The study site is located at approximately 2 500 meters above sea level in the Witsiehoek region, close to the Sentinal Peak. The specific focus of Zeenat's project is on how topographic variables such as slope aspect, slope angle, soil depth, and rockiness affect species richness, total vascular plant cover, and species composition on a fine, 1x1m, scale.
