Meteorology staff and students present at the 13th International Conference on Southern Hemisphere Meteorology and Oceanography (ICSHMO)

The conference was held from 8-17 February 2022 in Wellington New Zealand but was hosted as a fully virtual conference. The conference themes included Atmospheric processes and observations, Weather and extreme events, Air quality and pollution, Climate and climate change, Modelling and prediction and Science Communication, Education & Outreach. Eight students and staff from GGM were involved with the conference. The presentations were diverse, Prof Willem talked about patterns between South American and South African rainfall during El Niño–Southern Oscillation. Dr Thando and two of his students talked about Rossby waves and how they influence weather systems over South Africa. Prof Liesl introduced Africánes to the meteorology community while two of her students presented on extreme weather over South Africa. Charlotte McBride presented on extreme temperature records from a climatology point of view while Christina Liesker talked about supercells over the Highveld. Social scientist also had an presence as Elizabeth Viljoen, PhD student of Prof Liesl and Dr Nerhene presented on the efficacy of communication of warnings during Tropical cyclone Eloise.
