Good turnout for the GGM short course in Introductory Earth Observation

Posted on October 16, 2020

The department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology (hereafter GGM) once again successfully offered the short course in Introductory Remote Sensing from 6 to 8 October 2020. This course was led by Dr. Philemon Tsele who presented it to 11 delegates coming from various institutions such as, the Institute for Maritime Technology, Department of Water and Sanitation, Agricultural Research Council, Jurumani Solutions (PTY) Ltd and SMEC South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

This year became a serious challenge to offer this course due to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 and the subsequent lockdown regulations. In particular, the course was postponed three times this year and fortunately given the gradual relaxation of the lockdown regulations, it became possible to arrange for the course to take place on campus at the Informatorium computer labs. To our surprise, the attendance this year was higher than in 2019 and as a result, this could be an indication of growing interest particularly by professionals in industry, who have the appetite to acquire basic knowledge and skill in working with remotely sensed imagery products from Earth-observing satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles.
