GGY 252 field trip

Posted on October 07, 2019

On 5 October 2019, 55 second year students went on a field trip to Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves, along with Mr. Barend van der Merwe and Mr. Michael Loubser. The Sterkfontein Caves are a series of dolomitic caves that were once home to some of the most significant paleoanthropological finds of recent memory, including Mrs Ples and Little Foot. The descent into the dark and claustrophobic caverns was a new experience for many of the students, but it served as not only a fascinating glimpse into humanity’s past, but also as an interesting example of karst geomorphic landforms. After the adventure of the Sterkfontein Caves, the trip went to the more educational site that is Maropeng. Here, the group was treated to a guided tour of the Educational Facility, which included a boat ride, a short walk through the Vortex Tunnel and a large interactive exhibit that explained the basic elements of the development of humanity over time. The group was guided around both the Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng by a series of extremely knowledgeable guides, who contributed to making the day a wonderful and educational one that was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody that attended it.
