I obtained my MB ChB at the University of Cape Town in 1988. After three years in the Internal Medicine Department in the Bloemfontein (now Mangaung) academic hospital complex, I opted for a career in Family Medicine and completed my MPrax Med in my home-town at the University of Pretoria in 1996. From this time, I have worked as a specialist family physician in the Department of Family Medicine at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital and senior lecturer with the University of Pretoria. During my early years as a family physician, we were confronted with massive patient morbidity and mortality due to the complications of untreated HIV infection. This motivated me to become skilled in the holistic management of patients with life-threatening disease. I undertook an MPhil in palliative medicine, which I completed at the University of Cape Town in 2008. My job-related interests are palliative care and HIV medicine. In line with this, my MPhil research focus was neuropathic pain in patients with AIDS. Some of my current duties include heading up the adult HIV clinic at Kalafong Hospital and doing weekly ward rounds and telephonic consultations at the Leratong Hospice in Atteridgeville, as an outreach from Kalafong Hospital. I am also an examiner for the Diploma in HIV management of the College of Family Physicians of South Africa.
