Student Support

The Faculty of Health Sciences has a support system in place to assist students who themselves are struggling with a psychiatric disorder, are experiencing stress or emotional problems or who are struggling to cope with the demands of the course or the problems in their lives.

  1. Psychiatrist
  • Students who would like to seek help for any of these problems are encouraged to access the student support system. A Psychiatrist is available to assist students - Dr P Malherbe, a Psychiatrist not employed in the Department of Psychiatry. All information from the consultations are strictly confidential and the service is free of charge.
  • To make an appointment, students may contact Anisha or Marna at 087 098 0096 or send an e-mail to [email protected] (you do not need a referral).
  • Dr P Malherbe has consultation sessions at his practice at Akeso Arcadia Clinic, 871 Francis Baard Street, Arcadia. Please report to the receptionist.
  • The following information is required to make an appointment:
    • Student name
    • Course name and year
    • Student number
    • Cell number
    • Name of person who referred student (if applicable)

  1. Clinical Psychologist
  • There is also a Clinical Psychologist, Mr Sikander Kalla, who offers consulting services at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • His office is in Tswelopele Building, Level 1, Room 3-12, Prinshof South Campus.
  • Office hours are:        
    • Tuesdays: 08:00 – 18:00
    • Thursdays: 08:00 – 18:00

The Faculty is committed to provide support for students who are experiencing emotional and psychiatric problems in order to assist them in successfully completing the course. Students are encouraged to seek help when they are not coping instead of suffering in silence.
