The Department of Family Medicine has released A capability approach to learning. Like its other videos on COPC and infant feeding choices, 'a capability approach' is a short, animated cartoon that outlines the process of learning. It describes the dimensions of 'the learner' as a person with an embodied set of competencies. It explains that learning is triggered by disruption and that learning is the process of overcoming the challenges created by the disruption. In the capability approach, learning involves a set of conscious practices that improves or generates new competencies in the learner. With the help of facilitation, these practices are progressively internalized over time, to create lifelong learning.
