MMed Family Medicine

The Master’s in Family Medicine is a four year registrar training programme that at completion enables medical practitioners to register with the HPCSA as a specialist in family medicine. The programme is offered on site at training complexes in Gauteng (Pretoria, Tembisa) and Mpumalanga (Witbank, Delmas) with two day contact session, five times a year at the University of Pretoria.

Registrars are exposed to an appropriate spectrum of patients and conditions relevant to primary care and are supervised by specialists, either from the relevant discipline or Family Medicine. The training programme has a strong community oriented primary care focus with rotations to all major clinical disciplines. During the four year training period registrars do clinical rotations and service delivery at district hospitals and clinics in their area. Rotations can be adjusted to accommodate individual strengths and needs, taking into account the achievement of the learning outcomes. The nationally agreed learning outcomes and training requirements are specified in the Portfolio as published by the College of Family Physicians, CMSA. https://cmsa.co.za/college-of-family-physicians/

In order to join the programme prospective students need to apply for registrar posts which are advertised jointly by the relevant provincial authority and University of Pretoria when available. These registrar posts are 4 year contract posts under the agreed terms and conditions of the relevant province.
