Ethical practice of the health professions requires consistent and ongoing commitment from all concerned to lifelong learning to update and develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that underpin competent practice. This perspective protects the public interest and promotes the health of all members of the South African society. The Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974) (as amended), endorses Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as the means for maintaining and updating professional competence, to ensure that the public interest will always be promoted and protected, as well as ensuring the best possible service to the community.

Why CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) plays a crucial role in helping healthcare practitioners acquire new, up-to-date knowledge, skills and ethical attitudes, explains the HPCSA’s Prof Shajila Singh. “These new skills add measurable benefits to the professional practice and also enhance and promote professional integrity, to the ultimate benefit of the patient.”

In terms of Section 26 of the Health Professions Act, 1947 (Act No. 56 of 1974), all practitioners registered with the HPCSA must continue their professional development and training, and therefore have to complete a series of accredited CPD activities each year.
