Dr Marx-Pienaar is currently a lecturer in the Department of Consumer and Food Sciences. Her previous employment and industry experience in both hospitality and retail culminated in her master’s and doctoral studies, which focused on the sustainability of consumer consumption and ultimate waste practices as part of consumer satisfaction. She is currently an active research member of the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security. Other collaborative relationships and industry partnerships include membership of key retail groups and their respective supply chain members, the CSIR, WWF, as well as prominent international universities.

Dr Marx-Pienaar currently lectures on research design and methodology, food retail logistics and supply chain management, as well as consumer-related aspects of food. Her main research focus is on sustainable consumption and corporate social responsibility. Other interests include mitigation of food waste, consumer behaviour and profile mapping, food product development, marketing and life cycle analysis. She currently supervises or co-supervises eight masters and six PhD candidates. Her research has not only been published and disseminated in peer-reviewed scientific and non-refereed journals and conference proceedings but also through other media such as radio, national newspapers and numerous social media platforms. She has attended and presented posters and papers at several local and international workshops and conferences.
