Psychological Resilience in Youth

About: Psychological Resilience in Youth

Researchers affiliated to the Centre for the Study of the Resilience (CSR), Faculty of Education, University of Pretoria have secured a prestigious Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Resilience Foundation Award to investigate patterns of resilience among South African young people in a community affected by drought.

Study area: Psychological Resilience in Youth

In collaboration with a transdisciplinary team of UK researchers, community partners and South African researchers affiliated to UCT and UJ, Linda Theron (South African lead PI), Liesel Ebersöhn and Ruth Mampane will spend the next 12 months exploring the historical and contextual dynamics that enable young people and their communities to accommodate the far-reaching impacts of drought.  The international lead is Prof Angie Hart, University of Brighton, UK. She is globally respected for her championship of co-productive, innovative research designs that involve young people and their communities as co-researchers and co-disseminators.  Consequently, this study offers UP post-graduate students a unique opportunity to develop co-productive research and dissemination skills.

United We Stand - Young people from Leandra | University of Brighton

Natural disasters negatively impact upon the social, economic, and environmental systems that affect young people's mental health and wellbeing. The impacts of drought on young people are particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa where recurrent drought intersects with development challenges such as inequality, exclusion, poor education and a lack of employability skills. This video documents the work by and with young people in Leandra, South Africa, to understand how their residence is built in a community where drought is common. It involved members of the University of Brighton Centre of Resilience for Social Justice, Brighton-based Boingboing resilience network, Khulisa Social Solutions, the University of Johannesburg and the University of Pretoria alongside young people with lived experience of adversity. The Government’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) awarded funding of £166,000 to enable work with partners to improve understanding about what enables young people to withstand, adapt to, resist or challenge the many impacts that are caused through drought.
