History of the Department

1930: The Transvaal Universiteitskollege (or Transvaal University College) officially became the University of Pretoria on 10 October 1930, with a total of 1 074 students.
1956: The Department of Electro-technical Engineering came into existence.
1976: An independent Department of Electronic Engineering was established, making the University of Pretoria the first university with such a department.
1986: The Department of Electronic Engineering expanded to become the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
1991: The University’s student numbers grew to 23 375, making it the largest residential university in South Africa, and one of the largest in Africa.
1992: The Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering merged with the Department of Electrical Engineering to form the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
1999-2000: A new undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering is introduced, resulting in another name change to the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering in 2000.
