Professor Archie Dick will present a paper in August at the annual SHARP conference called Book History from Below on the notebook of the eighteenth century Slave teacher, Jan Smiesing. The Society for the History of Authorship, Reading & Publishing (SHARP) conference is hosted by the University of Helsinki and organizers include SHARP, the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland, the Nordic Centre for Medieval Studies, the Nordic-Baltic-Russian Network on the History of Books, Libraries and Reading and the Finnish Literature Society. The conference will be held from 17-21 August 2010.The conference theme, "Book Culture from Below," emphasizes the book culture of peasants, the laboring classes and other under-represented and oppressed groups, especially their independence and initiative in creating, using and deciphering printed works and print culture (http://www.sharpweb.org).
