Information for prospective postdoctoral researchers

The Department of Zoology and Entomology hosts a large and vibrant group of postdoctoral and research fellows drawn from around the world to study the unique African fauna. We welcome and value the new knowledge and skills that these researchers bring to the Department, and encourage them to participate in the academic culture of the Department. Postdoctoral and research fellows in the Department are able to co-supervise Honours, MSc and PhD students, and thereby gain important experience in research supervision.

The University of Pretoria is a research-intensive institution that consistently produces the highest number of research outputs in South Africa, and the Department of Zoology and Entomology is the largest contributor to this achievement (see Publications). Pretoria is located close to diverse African environments with unique study systems. The city is located on the interface between the grassland and savannah biomes, and in close proximity to internationally-renowned natural areas, including the Kruger National Park, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed “Cradle of Humankind”, Vredefort Dome and uKhahlamba/Drakensberg Park. Pretoria is also on the doorstep of the UNESCO Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve and Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. This central location not only provides excellent opportunities for research but also recreation. Being the administrative capital of South Africa and home to many international embassies, Pretoria also offers a diversity of cultures, cuisines, and entertainment opportunities, making it a great place to live and work.

Recent PhD graduates or those close to completion who are interested in postdoctoral research within the Department of Zoology and Entomology should contact a potential academic staff mentor to discuss available options.

To find out more about being a postdoctoral or research fellow in the Department of Zoology and Entomology, and for advice on relocation to Pretoria, contact the Postdoctoral Representatives, Dr Daniel Hart (for South African postdocs) or to be advised (for international postdocs).
