A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 07 February 2008

Posted on February 07, 2024

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University Prof Calie Pistorius lit the centenary flame.

The centenary celebrations at UP began on the evening of February 7, 2008, with a candlelight walk for students on campus. At the end of the evening, Professor Calie Pistorius lit the centenary flame in front of the Client Service Centre. The flame represents one hundred years of scholarship and learning, and it burnt throughout the centenary year to commemorate the historic event. Angus Taylor, an internationally recognised artist and UP alumni laureate, designed the vessel, while Sasol Technology's Walter Pel created the flame burner. SASOL supported the flame burner as part of their joint research and development effort with the University.
