On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby reported that an optical reader that was set to be installed in UP’s computer centrum.

The newspaper (featured above) reported the growth in student numbers were making marking a serious problem. Question papers are completed by making marks in special positions on the answering sheet. This completed forms are then fed through a marking reader. These forms were designed specifically for the general users and are printed on a standard size paper forms on which was set to make this form of marking fast and cheap.
