A day in the life at the University of Pretoria: 21 May 1921

Posted on May 21, 2025

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student body organized fete on church square.

Tukkies students organized this fete to raise money for additional sport fields to add to the four existing tennis courts . Students erected huge tents under the trees on Church square. One of these “Zoete Inval” sold waffles, and Dutch inspired sweets. Lectures also participated in the fundraising event by making furniture that was on sale on the day. The money raised on the day was enough to build more tennis courts and UP’s first football field.

The University of Pretoria (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo and clipping collection. The volumes of the University’s history captured in Ad Destinatium i-v, as featured here, also forms part of our collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection.
