A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 23 January 2006

Posted on January 23, 2025

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the principal and Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Calie Pistorius welcomed the first year students and explained his role on campus.

Prof Pistorius explained to the student newspaper, Perdeby, that as the Principal of the University his primary role is to establish the university's vision and delegate responsibility to Deans and Department Heads. This includes developing a "strategic plan" for the university's future and attracting top students from South Africa and globally. Professor Pistorius emphasized the importance of a balance between academic work and student life and stated that “This is a university where all people are welcome. A tertiary education is a great opportunity, but at the same time it is a great responsibility. I hope that when you leave you will become proud and loyal alumni”.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA's numerous holdings include an extensive photo collection, as well as publications like the Perdeby (today PDBY) as featured here.
