A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 03 May 1955

Posted on June 29, 2023

On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” the Mineral Sciences Building was opened by Dr F. Meyer, the Chairman of the UP Council.

This building was originally known as the Third Mathematics and Sciences Building. It was designed by architects A.L. Meiring and P.R. Nel to form part of the inner court of the University. It reflects elements of the Modern Brazilian style. It has a light green and white terrazzo cover and diamond-shaped windows adorning the two entrances. In the 1980s various departments were relocated resulting in the natural convergence of all the earth sciences departments in the same building, after which the name was changed to the Mineral Sciences Building.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
