A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 06 May 1994

Posted on June 29, 2023

On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on the ANC victory in the 1994 election.

Along with the rest of South Africa, ANC-TUKS celebrated Nelson Mandela’s victory. The Perdeby article reported that the UP ANC students spontaneously broke out in cries of “One Mandela, One President” and started the singing of the national anthem Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika at their offices in Tukkiewerf. In 1997, Nelson Mandela received an honorary doctorate in Law from UP for his contribution to justice, peace, reconciliation and democracy in South Africa.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
