On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported that an optical reader was set to be installed in UP’s computer centre.
The growth in student numbers during the 1970s made assessment difficult. To resolve this problem special computers were installed to assist lecturers with marking. Question papers were completed by making marks in specific positions on the answer sheets. The completed forms were then fed through a marking reader. As the forms were printed on standard sized paper, this form of marking was fast and cheap.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
