A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 30 August 1974

Posted on June 28, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, highlighted the accomplishments of the lecturers and students of the Carl and Emily Fuchs Institute of Microelectronics and the Department of Physics who produced SA’s first MOS transistor.

This Metal Oxide Semiconductor transistor was designed by Mr P. Rademeyer, a senior lecturer at the Department of Microelectronics and a postgraduate student at the Faculty of Engineering. The design of the transistor was one of the most sophisticated of its time, making these transistors faster than their bipolar predecessors and allowing for much higher switching speeds.  MOS technology is the key to the integration density required by modern digital devices.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
