On this “Day in the life at the University of Pretoria” Die Perdeby reported that UP would soon need additional parking as well as stop signs and a traffic officer to control the number of cars and bikes on campus.
The newspaper explained that parking on campus was wholly insufficient as only 155 cars and 541 bicycles could be accommodated in 1956. However, with more that 3000 students on the Hatfield Campus and a daily vehicle average of 195 cars, 87 motor bikes and 616 bicycles, the situation meant that the remainder of vehicles on campus were parked illegally.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
