A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 16 August 2013

Posted on June 27, 2023

Audiences attended the first public performance on the newly installed Rieger Organ in the UP Chapel on 16 August 2013. This "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" ended with an evening performance by Wim Viljoen, Ockie Vermeulen and Theo van Wyk. The installation of the organ greatly improved the facilities for organ tuition at the institution.

The commemorative publication for this event, stored in  the UP Archives holdings, explains that: “This magnificent instrument was designed by Josef Glatter-Götz and Prof Rudolf Scholz and built in 1982 for the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst (the University for Music and the Performing Arts) in Vienna, Austria.”  Thanks to the tireless efforts of Prof Antonie Melck it was moved to the University of Pretoria Chapel where “it has found a worthy home in a suitable acoustical environment”.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
