Posted on June 23, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the L.C. de Villiers Sportgrounds were officially opened.

The sportsgrounds were named after Louis Celliers de Villiers, professor in Geology. De Villiers was appointed in 1910 and became a professor in 1920. He was a sports enthusiast and was passionate about rugby. In 1913, he became honorary president of the Tuks Rugby Club. The new sports complex would include seven rugby fields, a cricket field as well as a soccer and hockey field. Later a netball field, athletics field and pavilion were also added.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
