On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on the success of the female hockey team.
The newspaper noted that the team had performed well at the recent 1978 hockey matches. In their match against ISCOR, Tukkies won 3 -1. Glenda Anderson and Glenda Matthews scored the two winning goals. The Tuks Ladies Hockey Club was founded in 1918 and grew steadily in the following decades. The photo above, for example features UP’s hockey team in the mid-1940s. By 1959, UP officially opened its very own hockey field. In 2003, Tuks Hockey received a new club house and more fields.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
