A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 09 November 1995

Posted on November 09, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the local municipality announced that it had approved strict regulations regarding student communes.

The newspaper, Beeld, reported that residents complained about the questionable living quarters, lamenting the overcrowding, noise and unruly behaviour of students. The municipality planned to limit capacity to no more than six students living in a single commune and further to require that a wall of at least two meters be erected around commune properties. No noise should be audible outside the boundaries of the properties.

The University of Pretoria Archive (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA also has an extensive photo and clipping collection. Please contact us  on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
