A day in the life at the University of Pretoria: 14 February 2007

Posted on February 14, 2025

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" UP students celebrated Valentine’s Day at the most romantic spot in Pretoria, the campus gardens.

During a 2007 poll the student newspaper the Perdeby found the University of Pretoria gardens, specifically the fountain at the Musaion to be the most romantic spot in Pretoria. Other romantic picnic venues included the National Botanical Garden, Austen Roberts Bird sanctuary,   Fairy Park in Groenkloof, Magnolia Dal gardens, Menlyn Park drive in and lastly the Botanical gardens.

The Musaion building was constructed on part of the University’s old athletics field. Remnants of the spectator terraces (pavilion) around the track can still be seen to the east of the Musaion. As noted by the 2007 article, these terraces still provided comfortable seating between lectures for staff and students.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has  an extensive photo collection and  extensive clipping collection in our holdings. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection.
