At the opening ceremony, as reported in the 1983 above,  the rector, prof DM Joubert, unveiled two plaques one in the Rembrandt hall and the other at the Sport centrum. Several performances took place at this opening ceremony. This included gymnastic performances as well as performances by the UP choir. The cost of the sport centrum amounted to about nine million rand. UP received some generous donations from the Rembrandt group henceforth the naming of the hall. The building and gardens were designed to complement the surrounding Hartbeespoortspruit area.
