Prof De Villiers was highly skilled in identifying minerals in the field. He valued fieldwork and he often took students on excursions to further their practical knowledge. Prof de Villiers was also very passionate about sports, rugby in particular.  He fulfilled the role of  sport coach, manager and chairman during his university career. The sport grounds, that was built in 1958 (pictured in article below), was named after De Villiers.
