On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Perdeby, reported that students and personnel will no longer have to fill in a card to take out books. Rather, as part of the modernization of the library, a computer will now be used to scan in and take out books.

The article (featured above) explained that the modernization done during this time includes:

  • 1750 study seats
  • Study cubicles that can be reserved by doctoral and master’s students
  • An electronic detector that will alert personnel if books to prevent loss of material
  • A computerized catalogue that will replace the traditional card catalogue and help to find books
  • This computerized system will alert students if their loan period on the books have expired
  • Facilities for the use of audio-visual material
  • And terminal where students can look for information on international databases
