The article (featured above and available via staff or student access through Newsbank here) states that there is a “plethora of professors in SA”. The Transvaal Technical Institute opened in Johannesburg in 1904 and focused on mining education. Classes were also offered by the institute in Pretoria. In 1906 the institute adopted a new name – the Transvaal University College (TUC). The article explained that the T.U.C, which included the extra mural students in Johannesburg and Pretoria, had a total of 128 members on its teaching staff and a total of 1048 students in 1931.
