Dr. Anton Rupert (1916–2006) receveid the honorary title of Tukkie of the Century at a gala function held in his honour on 20 November 2001. He  played an exceptional role at the University of Pretoria. Dr Rupert was a student leader, honorary professor, honorary doctor, benefactor and chancellor. He registered as a first year Bsc student in 1937 and also received his Msc degrees at Tuks.

On a national level and on the world stage, he proved himself to be a visionary thinker and leader. Dr. Rupert’ made large financial donations and precious art works to  UP. The imposing Van Wouw House, complete with its valuable sculptures, is another one of his generous donations.

Dr Rupert passed away only a few months after the death of his wife, Huberte, who also was a alumna and member of the Tuks SRC.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has  an extensive photo and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
