A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 01 February 1925.
01 February 1925: On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the first poultry farming lecturer was appointed. Although this position was already approved in 1917 the Transvaal University College (T.U.C) could not find a suitable, qualified, candidate.
The T.U.C council agreed to sponsor a student to gain experience abroad. On 5 November 1921 Leo A. van Rooyen, a graduate student in agriculture, was awarded the bursary. When he returned from the United States of America he was appointed as the first senior lecture in poultry science in the Faculty of Agriculture. He received a professorship in 1938 but resigned in 1939 to focus on his farm in Natal.
