24 August 1956: UP’s traffic problems. On this “Day in the life at the University of Pretoria” Die Perdeby, reported that UP will soon need additional parking as well as stop streets and a traffic officer to control the number of cars and bikes on campus.

The newspaper (featured above) explained that the parking was wholly insufficient. The daily vehicle average counted in 1956, was 195 cars, 87 motor bikes and 616 bikes. There were however more than 3000 students on Hatfield campus, and Tukkies could only accommodate 155 cars and 541 bikes, the remainder being parked illegally.
